If you’ve declared that 2013 is the year you’re going to revamp how you dress, makeover your look and/or update your style, you might want to begin by giving this simple little exercise a go.

It won’t take long.  It’s quick and easy, but it will get you thinking about exactly what it is you want to achieve.

It’s important before you begin defining, reinventing, developing…whatever it is you want to accomplish with your look this year, that you have a clear idea in your mind as to what your style currently is and where you’d like it to be.

Knowing exactly the style you’re aiming for helps you clean out your wardrobe, buy new clothes and put outfits together.

Step 1.  I want you to start off by reading over and thinking about these two questions.  (Two questions that I always have my new clients answer for me before we meet)

In 5 – 7 words describe your current style

In 5 – 7 words describe the style you aspire to achieve

These are examples of how someone might answer

QUESTION 1.    Comfortable, relaxed, dull, classic, sensible, boring, black

QUESTION 2.    Edgy, sophisticated, comfortable, stylish, sexy, classic

Step 2.  Now I want you to visualise how you see your current look and then when you have a clear picture, write it down.  (In 5 – 7 words or if you feel so inclined a paragraph, as long as you have a clear picture and you get it down on paper).

Step 3.  Then, once you’ve done that, imagine in your mind exactly how you’d like to look.  You might not want to look sexy or sophisticated. You might want to look youthful and feminine, fun and colorful or creative and modern.  Everyone is different. That’s the thing about personal style. When you have an image in your head, do as you did for question 1. and write it down.

Step 4.  Now your next step is to think about how you’re going to achieve the style and the look you aspire to.  What do you need to do?  Is the first thing to clean out your wardrobe and determine what you have to work with and what you need?  Do you need to learn about your body shape before you take the next step of buying new clothes?  Does it start with a health & fitness campaign, a new haircut or color or some new makeup?  Is it time for some new glasses?

Step 5. The final step in this exercise is to write down a style goal and work out how you plan on achieving it.  (Just like you would for any goal you have – saving for a holiday, buying a new car, getting a new job).  For some the goal might be just a small update – finding a flattering pair of jeans and getting a new haircut, but for others it may be a complete transformation.  The important thing is you take that first step to feeling the best you can about yourself.  Don’t leave it til next year.  Get started now.

Keep me posted (in the comments section below).  I’d love to hear what your goal is and then how you’re going to go about achieving it.  Good luck!

Good questions, Meaghan! Now to work out the answers…mmm…I think I like feminine/sexy…(probs less sexy these days!). Personal style is strange, isnt it..I can look at someone and think how fabulous they look..yet I wouldnt wear it in a fit…then the trick is to actually FIND something that is flattering to one’s shape, in the colors that suit! I think it just MIGHT be easier to start shopping on line more often! one thing is for sure, thanks to your suggestion..new sunglasses on the top of my list :)
