Black And White

“Tell me about this floral (pink, yellow, green, orange, red, blue) top”, I ask my client during her Wardrobe Overhaul, “Do you love it?”
“No”, comes the response, “I bought it because I thought I should add more color to my wardrobe.” “I hate it!”
There’s a misconception, I’ve discovered since doing this job, that to look interesting you need to wear lots of color and pattern – but it’s simply not true.
In fact, as you can see in the pictures below and above, often the most stylish and sophisticated looks can be achieved by simply wearing black and white.
And there’s nobody better to highlight this than the women who personify style than Grace, Jackie and Audrey.
My tips to make certain your black and white outfit looks chic, rather than bland, are to:
- Ensure the black is very black and the white is very white (ie those faded pants you’ve been wearing to work for the past 7 years won’t cut it)
- Make sure the fit is impeccable. (Because black and white is so clean, an ill- fitting silhouette will be highlighted)
- Keep the cuts and styles modern (Rather than outdated)
- Put plenty of consideration into how you decorate your black and white pieces (Don’t let down an otherwise great outfit with a daggy, sensible shoe or scruffy handbag)

CHALLENGE – Pull out all the black and white pieces (including, t-shirts, belts, scarves, shoes, knits, etc) from your wardrobe and put them on the bed. After checking them all out to determine whether they make the cut, come up with at least 5 different outfits using these pieces. Be creative!
