The Personal Style of Costanza Pascolato

5 Jan

I aspire to be half as stylish and elegant as Italian born, Vogue contributor, Costanza Pascolato, when I’m 80.

There’s a lot we can take for inspiration, from observing how Costanza dresses and styles herself.

She keeps her canvas very simple – generally in slim black pants and top, but then decorates them with a great jacket, lovely shoes, statement jewellery (Did you notice her skull ring?) and over-sized sunglasses.   And then of course, there’s her signature coiffed hair.  (I’ve also noticed she always wears the same shade of lipstick.)

About aging, on Garance Dore’s site, Costanza was quoted as saying..

“I am a lucky person. All women in my family were strong and positive. They taught me to accept aging. But of course, they were intelligent, elegant, and my mother was very beautiful. The new generation follows their examples: my daughter Consuelo is 50 and looks great. And Alessandra is 48 and looks much younger than her age. We all have a sense that life is a privilege. So we treat our bodies (and souls) gracefully. I do a lot of exercise, eat well etc., but I do not try to look much younger than I am. I only want to look the best for my age, and that, happily, makes me stay away from anxiety.”

Black And White

6 Dec

“Tell me about this floral (pink, yellow, green, orange, red, blue) top”, I ask my client during her Wardrobe Overhaul, “Do you love it?”

“No”, comes the response, “I bought it because I thought I should add more color to my wardrobe.”  “I hate it!”

There’s a misconception, I’ve discovered since doing this job, that to look interesting you need to wear lots of color and pattern – but it’s simply not true.

In fact, as you can see in the pictures below and above, often the most stylish and sophisticated looks can be achieved by simply wearing black and white.

And there’s nobody better to highlight this than the women who personify style than Grace, Jackie and Audrey.

My tips to make certain your black and white outfit looks chic, rather than bland, are to:

  • Ensure the black is very black and the white is very white (ie those faded pants you’ve been wearing to work for the past 7 years won’t cut it)
  • Make sure the fit is impeccable.  (Because black and white is so clean, an ill- fitting silhouette will be highlighted)
  • Keep the cuts and styles modern (Rather than outdated)
  • Put plenty of consideration into how you decorate your black and white pieces (Don’t let down an otherwise great outfit with a daggy, sensible shoe or scruffy handbag)

CHALLENGE – Pull out all the black and white pieces  (including, t-shirts, belts, scarves, shoes, knits, etc) from your wardrobe and put them on the bed.  After checking them all out to determine whether they make the cut, come up with at least 5 different outfits using these pieces.  Be creative!

21 Nov

“At that age, women were officially deemed old and were therefore expected to keep their bodies shrouded. On them, bright colors were considered garish; loose hair was out of the question.” – More Magazine

How Clothes Can Help You Look And Feel Youthful

30 Sep

Of course he’s pretty spunky, which helps, but I think these photos of Brad Pitt in the latest GQ magazine highlight how clothes, grooming, and taking care of yourself, can help keep you looking (and feeling) youthful.

How Clothes Can Help You Look And Feel Youthful

Yes, there would be some photo- shopping, some spray- tanning, make-up, botox possibly, etc, etc.. but as a stylist, the first thing I noticed was how they’ve dressed him.

How Clothes Can Help You Look And Feel Youthful

The cool sunnies in particular- and colors of clothes they’ve used, how he’s wearing them, how they fit him, the style of jeans ..

… and then, how fit and healthy he looks. (I know, the ciggie in his mouth is not really a good look but I can manage to see past that here) .

Then… if you scroll down you’ll see I’ve posted a pic of Spencer Tracy in 1955. Here he’s the same age as Brad is in the GQ photos. (55)
