How Clothes Can Help You Look And Feel Youthful

30 Sep

Of course he’s pretty spunky, which helps, but I think these photos of Brad Pitt in the latest GQ magazine highlight how clothes, grooming, and taking care of yourself, can help keep you looking (and feeling) youthful.

How Clothes Can Help You Look And Feel Youthful

Yes, there would be some photo- shopping, some spray- tanning, make-up, botox possibly, etc, etc.. but as a stylist, the first thing I noticed was how they’ve dressed him.

How Clothes Can Help You Look And Feel Youthful

The cool sunnies in particular- and colors of clothes they’ve used, how he’s wearing them, how they fit him, the style of jeans ..

… and then, how fit and healthy he looks. (I know, the ciggie in his mouth is not really a good look but I can manage to see past that here) .

Then… if you scroll down you’ll see I’ve posted a pic of Spencer Tracy in 1955. Here he’s the same age as Brad is in the GQ photos. (55)

Are You Dressing Too Old?

1 Jul

There are many reasons why some of us dress older than we need to. It may be the company we keep is older than we are; we might think the number on our drivers license dictates how we should look; we may recall that this was how our mother dressed when she was this age or we just don’t feel youthful and attractive any more.

I know when we get to a mature age it can be tricky because we can worry about dressing too young. (I’m just about to turn 52, so I’m constantly asking myself whether I think something is too young or too old for me to wear.) But I think what often happens, in trying to make sure we don’t dress too young is, we dress too old.

Fortunately there are simple changes you can make to your wardrobe that will immediately make you look and feel more youthful, up to date and attractive.

..and let’s face it, every woman, despite their age, size, lifestyle, shape or budget deserves to feel good about themselves.

You can see in these before and after photos what a difference clothes can make.  (Despite the fact that they are a few years old and some of the pieces are a little bit dated)

In this photo the clothes are ill-fitting, shapeless, unflattering, old fashioned and drab.

In the photo below, the same woman is wearing clothes that, without being too tight or uncomfortable,  highlight the figure, fit quite well, show a little bit of skin and are more modern.

She looks younger.  (And slimmer)

Do you feel trapped in the fashion past and stuck in a world of beige, plain, sensible, too big, drab, unflattering, clothes?

Consider the following when assessing whether your wardrobe is too old and whether you need a fashion makeover

  • There is not one fitted, figure enhancing item in your wardrobe
  • You haven’t updated your reading or sunglasses in fifteen years
  • You wear your hair the same way you did in primary school
  • You either don’t own a pair of jeans or the ones you do have are acid washed and the waist is almost up to your armpits (or so low they almost reach your pubic line)
  • The only handbag you use is the one your Nana gave you for your 21st
  • Your last bra fitting was also your first
  • 99% of what you have in your wardrobe is functional and comfortable, rather than stylish and flattering
  • The only pair of heels in your cupboard are the ones packed away in a box with your wedding dress
  • You still have and from time to time wear, outdated outfits you wore to work in the eighties
  • The majority of your wardrobe is two sizes too big or too small

Are you dressing too old?

Black And White

26 Nov

“Tell me about this floral (pink, yellow, green, orange, red, blue) top”, I ask my client during her Wardrobe Overhaul, “Do you love it?”

“No”, comes the response, “I bought it because I thought I should add more color to my wardrobe.”  “I hate it!”

There’s a misconception, I’ve discovered since doing this job, that to look interesting you need to wear lots of color and pattern – but it’s simply not true.

In fact, as you can see in the pictures below and above, often the most stylish and sophisticated looks can be achieved by simply wearing black and white.

And there’s nobody better to highlight this than the women who personify style than Grace, Jackie and Audrey.

My tips to make certain your black and white outfit looks chic, rather than bland, are to:

  • Ensure the black is very black and the white is very white (ie those faded pants you’ve been wearing to work for the past 7 years won’t cut it)
  • Make sure the fit is impeccable.  (Because black and white is so clean, an ill- fitting silhouette will be highlighted)
  • Keep the cuts and styles modern (Rather than outdated)
  • Put plenty of consideration into how you decorate your black and white pieces (Don’t let down an otherwise great outfit with a daggy, sensible shoe or scruffy handbag)

CHALLENGE – Pull out all the black and white pieces  (including, t-shirts, belts, scarves, shoes, knits, etc) from your wardrobe and put them on the bed.  After checking them all out to determine whether they make the cut, come up with at least 5 different outfits using these pieces.  Be creative!

Style At Any Age

14 Oct

I took some time off last Friday to spend the afternoon with my Mum and Dad in the country. It was my Mum’s birthday. I bought her a pair of white boyfriend jeans and after we’d been to lunch we went home and played around with some ways she could wear them.

She didn’t have any white bottoms in her wardrobe so they added something fresh and different and gave her quite a few new outfits. This was one of the combos we put together.

(While she will wear the jeans cuffed they’re a little bit long and need taking up – but you get the gist)

For anyone wondering whether they are too old to wear…

1. A leather jacket
2. White jeans
3. Boyfriend jeans
4. Sneakers

Mum’s 75!

Mum’s wearing..
Jeans – Trenery
Linen t-shirt – Trenery
Scarf – Trenery
Leather jacket – Armani Exchange
Sneakers – Kmart
