You Don’t Have To Be Trendy To Be Current And Fashionable

You don’t need to buy into trends.

Generally if I buy anything that’s “on trend” it’s not something I’ll spend a lot of money on. If you follow me on Instagram you might have noticed a pair of patterned pants I bought recently for $69 at Zara. (If you missed it you can see them here) When I shop and spend a bit of money, it’s on things I want to still have and wear in my wardrobe in 5, 8, 10 years. (Like this jacket I’ve had since the 90’s)

While you don’t need to follow trends what I encourage you to do, if you want to keep your look current, is be aware of changes in proportions. Are pants still wide in the leg or are they getting skinnier? Are waist bands sitting low or high on the waist? Are sleeves narrow or wide?

Having said that, I know it’s not all that easy and can be confusing and frustrating. You might have a pair of wide leg pants you used to wear to work 8 years ago and you’ve noticed that wide leg pants are in the stores again. Does this mean that your wide legs pants are fashionable again? More often than not, no! Wide leg pants might be current again, but they may be skinnier or wider through the thigh or higher in the waist. Things will come around again, but shapes change.

How do you stay up to date with what styles and proportions are current?

Jeans And A Tee

20 Nov

Even the most simple combination of  jeans and t-shirt can become a chic outfit by adding a smart jacket, a beautiful bag, a great shoe, an interesting belt or a piece of statement jewellery.

The key is to make sure that tee and those jeans fit and flatter.

Make your essential wardrobe basics look interesting – by not forgetting the decoration.

Fabulous Flats

11 Nov

Just because you need/want to wear comfy shoes (really who doesn’t?) it doesn’t mean they have to be boring, frumpy or old-fashioned.

Look for styles that are interesting and elegant.

You can see in this photo above, the rest of the outfit is relatively simple and the amazing shoes (by Christian Louboutin) are the stand out.

Challenge yourself to find great shoes. (Even if you don’t have a Louboutin shoe budget) Great shoes will instantly take your wardrobe from so-so to sophisticated and stylish.

You’ve Bought The Dress But Have You Thought About The Underwear

23 Oct

The Melbourne Cup Carnival is only a week away.  If you’re planning on going to any of the race days and in the process of putting together an outfit,  don’t forget to think about your underwear.

There’s no point wearing a beautiful dress if you’re not going to get the foundation garments right.

Think about it now. Have a dress rehearsal. Try on your outfit in good light and work out what you need. Don’t just leave it til the morning of the event to put on your dress and discover you have a revealing bra strap, a wobbly tummy (caused by flimsy fabric) or lumps and bumps around the thigh where the underpants dig into your leg.

You’ve gone to all that effort to put together something lovely to wear don’t spoil it by neglecting the little details.

*One of the best examples of wearing great underwear can be seen on Oprah here

TIP: If you’ve bought the outfit but not yet the underwear, take what you plan to wear to the underwear store with you.  Show your dress to one of the staff in the store and ask them to suggest what might work and then try the underwear and the dress on together.
