How To Wear A Shirt From The Men’s Department

19 Jun

I love women wearing men’s shirts.   I think the look can be really chic, in a tomboy kind of way. Feminine/masculine is very much a part of my style.

The key to wearing something borrowed from the boys (whether it’s a jacket, a knit or a shirt) is to incorporate an element of femininity.

Consider..

  • Showing just the right amount of skin – whether it’s your decolletage, your wrists or your legs
  • Accessorising – with belts, earrings, sunglasses, necklaces, bracelets, bags, etc..
  • Wearing an elegant shoe – a ballet flat, beaded flat sandals or heels
  • If you’re wearing it oversized, team it with something that fits snuggly and accentuates and flatters your figure – a pencil skirt, slim jeans or pants
  • Painting your nails
  • Putting on some lippy or coating your lashes with mascara
  • Exposing a hint of lovely lingerie
For inspiration, here’s a few images of some women I think get the look just right..

Are You Wearing Your Scarves Or Just Collecting Them?

30 Apr

It’s not unusual to discover, when I’m doing a wardrobe overhaul at a clients home, several beautiful scarves.  But often when I ask my client to show me how they wear them, they say they don’t.  They’re either not sure how to or they’re not sure whether they’re really their style.

My response is always if a scarf is not your style, then pass it on to someone whose style it is, and if it is your style, then just wear it.  Play around and experiment with your scarves and enjoy them rather than just collect them.

Wearing a lovely scarf has many advantages. It can help express your style, it can add some interest to an otherwise dull outfit and if worn in a certain way, it can be very flattering to your shape. (Keep in mind bulky scarves might not be the most flattering style for you)

If you’re not one of the eighteen odd million people who have already watched this great little video showing you several ideas for how to wear your scarf, I recommend you do so.

Are you wearing your lovely scarves or are they just sitting in your wardrobe unworn, because you’re not sure about them?

This Is How Great Underwear Looks

20 Feb

I don’t need to use a lot of words in this post to express what I’m trying to show you – the photos say it all.

Oprah’s body language and the expression on her face tell us that she knows she looks good and she’s feeling it.

What I love about these shots of Oprah, is that they’re telling me she’s not thinking – “I’m too old to wear that”, “Nobody looks at me now anyway”, “I should be dressing more conservative at my age” or “I don’t have the figure for it anymore“.   The photos say to me I’m embracing my maturity and my beautiful womanly shape and I feel fabulous.

Not only do the photos demonstrate to us the impact wearing something that makes you feel great has, but they help us to see what the result is when you wear something that spectacularly flatters your shape  (the neckline, the length, the ruching across the tummy) and more importantly, what an impact great underwear can do to your overall look. (Oprah has supposedly said Spanx “changed my life”).

The photos of Oprah wearing the white skirt and pink top, are a different story.

Who would know she had such a lovely waistline in this outfit.

Her figure is hidden in too much fabric and volume.  Her clothes are making her look bigger than she is.

She’s incredible!

Do Your Own Thing

14 Feb

While some of the fashionistas attending the autumn/winter 2013 ready-to-wear shows are following the current trend of wearing their coats and jackets oversized, Emmanuelle Alt, Vogue Paris editor-in-chief, is true to form, doing her own thing and wearing her coats pulled in at the waist with a belt.

We all know I do love a belt and I’m a big proponent for accentuating the waist, so the inspiration I’m taking from these photos of Emmanuelle is that I’m going to follow her lead and attempt to add new life by changing the look of some of my winter coats with different belts. I’m going to pull out all my coats, try them on with my various belts and see what works. Perhaps before winter comes around I need to add a couple of belts I can wear around my waist, to my shopping wishlist and keep an eye out for new ones to add to my collection.  (TIP: Don’t wait til winter is here. Plan ahead. Give yourself plenty of time to search for interesting pieces and bargains. Some of my favourite belts have been found in op-shops and vintage stores.)

And the most inspirational thing for me, one that I always take from Emmanuelle and her style, is to do your own thing.  If you want to just wear black – wear black.  If you want to only wear pants – only wear pants.  If you want to wear flats – wear flats.  If you want to cinch in the waist of your coat when everyone else is wearing it shapeless and oversized – cinch in your waist.

Do your own thing……if it makes you feel great.
