Where I Learnt About Tailoring

1 Dec

Much of what I know about tailoring and how clothes should fit, I learnt from Jose.

He’s been doing alterations to my clothes for about 15 years – while I’ve been observing and absorbing everything he does and asking him hundreds of (possibly annoying) questions, quizzing him on why he’s doing what he’s doing, what can be done, what can’t be done, where should a shoulder sit, a sleeve finish, etc, etc)

If you need anything made or altered go and see Jose Zarpan and tell him I sent you. He’s on Level 3 in the Nicholas Building, Swanson St, Melbourne.

*This is not a sponsored post, and I don’t receive any “kickbacks”/commission from Jose, I just think he’s very good and am very happy to highly recommend him.

The Velvet Blazer

3 Aug

The newest addition to my wardrobe is this navy velvet blazer.

You can spend a squillion dollars on a fancy designer blazer but if it doesn’t fit properly (ie the shoulders, the armholes, the length, the sleeve width, the sleeve length, the back seam and the lapels) it’ll never look great.  (*If you’d like to learn how to know when a blazer fits you perfectly book in for a styling session with me here)

If it’s not quite right, leave it behind in the store or commit to having it altered.

TIP – The shoulders should always fit perfectly because it’s too hard to have them fixed..

This one was on sale for $39 and it fits just right. (I also bought it in black)

This Is One Alteration You Should Know About

13 Mar

Avoid any extra bulk or bunching around the hip area – unless you want to draw attention to it.

If a pocket is causing this to happen, remove it.

I’m taking these cargo pants to my tailor and getting him to chop the pockets out and then stitch them up, so they sit flat and neat.

*The same can be achieved with your white jeans. Often you can see the pockets through the denim and it can draw attention to the area or look messy.   Just have them removed….

The Light Trench

22 Feb

As autumn approaches it’s time to think about what could be added to your wardrobe to transition it from the warmer to cooler weather.

A light trench coat is one such piece worth considering because it offers so much versatility.

Wear it to work with a skirt and blouse, out for dinner with your jeans, throw it over your shoulders if you’re going to a wedding or wear it casually to a gallery or while you’re watching your kids play sport on the weekend, with your boots or sneakers.

If your style is not too classic look for something a bit different…edgier and unique (like the one pictured).  Contrary to popular thought, trench coats come in various versions of the original style.

As with everything you wear always think about whether the style is flattering for your body shape and inspect it from head to toe, (don’t forget back and side on too) to ensure the fit is right.
