The Master Of Dressing For Summer, Classic Style

13 Jan

Summer style for classic dressers can be challenging.  Particularly holiday dressing and even more so, beach holiday dressing.

Some classic dressers, myself included, are not typically attracted to floaty, flowy, soft, patterned fabrics and can therefore struggle when it’s time to pack our cases for a destination where it’s going to be hot.

Our wardrobes might be mostly made up of tailored, safe, traditional, structured pieces.

But obviously we can’t go on a sea or pool side holiday (or in summer in general) in our blazers, crisp shirts and trench coats. So our challenge is to find casual clothes that work for our style, in the heat.

The person who achieved this more than anyone, was Jackie Kennedy.

It was all about keeping what she wore very simple and then decorating with fabulous accessories.

For those fellow classic dressers out there, here are some photos to give you some inspiration.

*Remember these photos are just to give you ideas.  It’s up to you to adapt the look for your age, size, height, budget, lifestyle, etc, etc.

The Summer Alternative To Your Everyday Handbag

15 Dec

Rather than lugging around your big leather everyday bag in summer, consider swapping occasionally to something more casual.

I tend to do it on the weekends.  If I’m shopping or catching up with friends for lunch I’ll carry my French market basket or a small colorful straw clutch.

Bags, just like shoes, have the power to make your outfit more casual or alternatively, more dressy.

Give it a try.

Maybe you have a little dress you wear to work (perhaps a shirt style) with a classic pump and your everyday (More than likely black) handbag.  Now try it with a pair of tan tan sandals or an espadrille and a straw basket or canvas tote. It feels and looks completely different. It means by changing your bag and shoes, you have a new outfit for a different occasion.  You can wear the dress somewhere other than just work

Five Ways To Wear A Denim Shirt

30 Nov

If you’ve worked with me before you’ll know I encourage everyone to try and come up with at least five ways to wear every piece in your wardrobe.

Personally, I do it at the shopping stage.  I visualise at least three ways I could wear something before I even buy it.

For some people this can take a bit of practice and taking inspiration from photos is a good way to get  you thinking and imagining how you could wear various items you have hanging in your wardrobe.

In this case I’ve chosen to show you five ways Viviana Volpicella has worn her denim shirt and hopefully, if you own one, you might get some ideas.

*Remember not to the take the photos too literally.  When you look at them, think creatively.

Fashions On The Field

7 Nov

What a great story…

Emily’s Mum made the beautiful navy blue dress she wore on Oaks Day in the Fashion’s on Field competition, inspired by a dress she saw on Pinterest.

It just goes to show, you don’t need to wear fancy designer clothes to look stylish. You just need to know what suits you and what fits you properly.

*The other part of the story is that, as part of her prize, Emily was given a fancy new car (Lexus) to drive for 12 months and just last weekend the old car she’d had since she was 18, died.

You can read all about Emily and her lovely dress here

(Emily went on to take out the overhaul competition on Thursday)

*Note Emily’s bag and shoes don’t match.   READ: Matchy Matchy here
