How To Wear Your Collar

9 Jun

I know, … it’s not exactly a sexy topic, yet it’s one we really shouldn’t ignore.

As I’ve mentioned previously, details matter.

In fact details can sometimes be the difference between whether an outfit looks shabby, just ok or great.

In this instance, the detail in question is, the collar.

Because the collar is so close to your face it appears right in the eye line of others.

Frayed collar

So it’s hard to miss a collar that is dated, stained, crumpled, frayed or *flying.

If you have one that sits in any of the above categories, I’d encourage you to remove it from your wardrobe and send it on it’s way.  ASAP.

*If you often wear a blazer/suit jacket with a shirt, tuck those collars in.

Like this..

Not like this..

Flying collars

It’s ok if they pop out a bit but don’t purposely spread them like wings. (Like Miranda has done above)  More than likely, they’ll make your outfit look out-dated.

Keep your look modern and fresh. Flying collars can appear a bit 90’s.  (Unless of course that’s the look you’re going for)

How To Keep Whites Clothes White

30 Dec

If you’ve ever given the inside of your home a fresh coat of paint, you’ll know the difference it makes.  Everything feels clean and new again.

The same thing applies to your clothes.  When you spend some time maintaining shoes, bags and garments, you breath renewed life into them.

Over the weekend I soaked white tees and shirts.

All I do is place the items in some Sard Wonder Oxy Plus (sometimes bleach) and cold or hot water (depending on the fabric)  in a bucket and leave overnight.  Then in the morning I’ll throw them in the washing machine and run them through a wash cycle.  When they come out they’re bright white.

Taking care of your clothes is important.  Maintaining bally knits or yellow stained under arms requires time we’d all rather be spending on more glamourous things (like shopping).  But really there’s no point buying a new pair of fabulous shoes, if you’re going to wear them with a pair of scruffy pants with a fallen hem.

*Always check the washing instructions on each garment and the instructions for using the detergents before you do.

How To Wear Nude Shoes

18 Sep

This is how a nude shoe should look.

The shoes blend in beautifully with the color of the wearers skin and therefore become an extension of the legs, making them appear longer and leaner.

The focus becomes all about the person – their face and what they’re wearing – away from the feet.

Nude shoes are a great choice when you’re wearing something colorful or pattered. In fact, they pretty much go with everything.

Nude shoes elongate the legs

Tip: Keep in mind that there are so many different shades of “nude”,  so if you’re buying a pair of shoes to wear to a special occasion (maybe the races), you’ll need to consider whether you will be tanning your legs.  If so, apply some tan before you hit the shops so that you don’t end up with two very different shades of nude. (ie an orangey tan and pinky-nude shoe)

It’s not always easy, or even possible, to find the perfect match to your skin, but it’s always a good idea to aim for it (just like if you were trying to find the perfect color foundation for your face) and try and find something as close as you can to your skin color.

How To Wear A Shirt From The Men’s Department

19 Jun

I love women wearing men’s shirts.   I think the look can be really chic, in a tomboy kind of way. Feminine/masculine is very much a part of my style.

The key to wearing something borrowed from the boys (whether it’s a jacket, a knit or a shirt) is to incorporate an element of femininity.

Consider..

  • Showing just the right amount of skin – whether it’s your decolletage, your wrists or your legs
  • Accessorising – with belts, earrings, sunglasses, necklaces, bracelets, bags, etc..
  • Wearing an elegant shoe – a ballet flat, beaded flat sandals or heels
  • If you’re wearing it oversized, team it with something that fits snuggly and accentuates and flatters your figure – a pencil skirt, slim jeans or pants
  • Painting your nails
  • Putting on some lippy or coating your lashes with mascara
  • Exposing a hint of lovely lingerie
For inspiration, here’s a few images of some women I think get the look just right..
