Navy and Green

11 Sep

When I was growing up wearing blue and green was not the done thing.  I still remember when I first started working at a stockbroking firm (in the mid eighties), wearing something combining the two colors and my boss politely suggesting, “Blue and green should not be seen”.  For years after that I avoided wearing the two together because I thought doing so was committing a fashion faux pas. But just like many of those old-fashioned style rules that notion is now dated.

I think blue and green look great together. What do you think?

Pink and Navy

9 Jul

If you’re someone who likes to wear color (and remember you don’t have to) perhaps you have some outfit combinations staring back at you from your wardrobe, that you’ve not considered before.

In this case, have a look through your clothes and see if there’s any pink and navy in there and then experiment with combining the two in an outfit (or two).

  • navy pants with pink shoes
  • a pink blouse with a navy skirt
  • a navy cardigan over a pink dress
  • a pink coat with a navy clutch bag
  • a navy silk camisole under a pink jacket

If you love pink but sometimes feel when wearing it, that it seems a bit young and girly for you, adding a splash of navy will make it more sophisticated.

The Denim Skirt

29 May

denim skirt

While I don’t think denim skirts have ever really been completely out of fashion, they are certainly having a moment now.  We’ll be seeing more and more of them in the stores over the next few months – different colored denim and different shapes and styles. Keep an eye out!  If you’ve got an old one in the wardrobe, it’s a good time to pull it out and play around with modern ways to wear it.

Think of a denim skirt as an alternative to jeans.  Wear it in the same way as you’d wear them.  With a t-shirt or blouse and sandals in summer and with a knit, a coat and boots in winter.

A denim skirt, just like jeans, can be dressed up or dressed down and worn for various different occasions. To coffee with girlfriends, for casual Fridays in the office or shopping on the weekend

Find a style that works for your shape and then wear it in a way that represents your style – whether that’s classic, bohemian or whatever..

*Don’t be put off a denim skirt because you think the style doesn’t suit your shape.  Just like all skirts there’s a style for everyone.  For example, if a straight style doesn’t work for you, maybe an a-line style will.

Little Details That Can Ruin An Outfit

8 Apr

Don’t spoil the look of an otherwise great outfit, by leaving the price stickers on the sole of your shoes.

I know it may seem a little petty, but sometimes those little things make a big difference to the overall effect of your outfit.

Of course none of us are perfect (I once took two different shoes of the same color but of drastically different heights  to wear to a clients home and when I arrived and realised, had to wear the sneakers I had driven in to the appointment. All I could do was laugh at myself) and sometimes we just forget or we simply didn’t realise we needed to do something .  It’s good, though, to be aware of things.  (Like removing designer labels from coats and scarves. Another spoiler!)
