How To Clash Prints

21 Sep

image via here

The image above is from the streets of Milan during Fashion Week.

While the clash of patterns and colors is quite extreme, it still gives us a good idea as to how to wear two prints together in the one outfit.

Why this particular combination works (though I’m sure some of you might dispute that) is because of the grey running through both pieces.

What do you think about clashing patterns?  Would you give it a try?  Yay or nay?

(It’s certainly not for everyone. While I admire the look a lot, I very much doubt I could wear it myself and feel confident in it….sadly.)

The Secret To Jennifer Aniston’s Style

1 Sep

When I work with someone new I always ask them if there is anyone’s style they admire. (This just gives me a bit of an idea as to what they like, in the same way I might ask you to tell me what music you listen to or how your home is decorated)

Often if someone is quite classic, non fussy, simple and casual with their style they might mention Jennifer Aniston.

Jennifer’s look often involves a t-shirt or singlet with a pair of jeans, sometimes a blazer and a pair of wedges. It looks very easy to achieve – and it can be – but there’s several reasons why Jennifer or any other celebrities with great style look good in their clothes. It’s because..

  1. More than likely they’re wearing clothes of relatively good quality.
  2. Everything they wear looks fresh and new. They wouldn’t wear anything that was pilled, stained, stretched, scuffed or faded.
  3. They wear clothes that are flattering for their body shape.
  4. They wear clothes that fit them perfectly.

This was highlighted recently when Jennifer Aniston was asked about her style, in particular her love of T-shirts and jeans.

“This is my secret:  The trick to T-shirts is I that I usually tailor them. Which is silly, but it works.”

“Or you just have to find the perfect one”, she told the site.

So while Jennifer’s look may appear effortless, it isn’t exactly.  It’s well thought out.  She doesn’t just wear any old t-shirt, she wears one that is just right.

Having our t-shirts tailored is unrealistic for most of us, but striving to find a great one, is not.

As with all the pieces you wear, it’s the little(ish) things like ensuring you’re wearing the most flattering sleeve, the most flattering neckline, the most flattering length, the most flattering size and the most flattering fabric, that make the big difference to how stylish your overall look is – if that matters to you.

How Not To Wear White Jeans

1 Aug

White jeansimage via here

If you’re thinking about investing in a pair of white jeans keep in mind that white should not be worn skin tight – they should just skim the hips and thighs (as above) – not strangle.  Despite your size.

There is a white jean for everyone and every body shape it really is a matter of trying lots of different styles (and there are many) to get the pair that works best for you.

Apart from the size and shape, pay lots of attention to the fabric. Too sheer will not be flattering on anyone.

And then once you’ve found a pair you love, you need to think about what you wear underneath.   Whatever style of underwear you wear it must be nude. (ie. not white…& not too tight)

The Casual Blazer

5 May

A blazer pulls it all together and makes everything smarter.

A casual blazer is a dressier option than a cardie.

..and as you can see above a blazer can even be worn with sneakers.

If you’ve only ever related blazers to school or work, try and get your head around wearing them casually.

It’s just a matter of trying different styles to find something that works for you.

TIP  If you have a blazer in your wardrobe make sure it fits you properly. I often find my clients do have a blazer or two in the wardrobe, but often they don’t fit.  *Hint – the one above fits perfectly

Put your blazer on and pay special attention to:

  • the length and width of the sleeves
  • how it sits across your shoulders
  • how it sits across your bust
  • how it fits across your back
  • how it fits at the waist
  • the length

…..& finally how it’s fitting under your arms

Remember – Near enough is not good enough if looking stylish is important to you.
