What To Consider When Shopping In Cheap and Cheerful Stores

22 Mar

I was told by someone who worked in Spain at the head office of a well known clothing brand, that their clothes were designed to last 16 washes.

Whether it’s right or not, I’m not sure, but I always keep this in mind when I buy anything from them. (or similar stores). What it means is that when you buy cheap and cheerful fast fashion, the pieces are not intended to have a long life. You might notice your new t-shirt loses shape after just one wash; even though you’ve only had them 6 months, the crotch of your jeans starts to wear out and a thread is hanging from every buttonhole of a shirt, after only a few wears.

If you want to invest in and build a wardrobe of clothes that have longevity, rather than fill it with stuff (that you might have to throw out after a few washes or wear shabbily) buy quality pieces.

For example, the shirt I wore in the photo above is 100% silk. It cost me a fairly hefty price about 3 or 4 years ago, but it still looks like new and I imagine if I take good care of it, I’ll have it for another 3 or 4 years – at least. It won’t stop me from buying from the cheaper brands  (If you follow me on Instagram you’ll notice I often wear cheap and cheerful) but I’m very conscious of making sure their pieces don’t make up the bulk of my wardrobe.

(Note: Buying quality pieces does not necessarily mean expensive or designer.  I consider the jeans I’m wearing in this photo to be of good quality and they only cost me about $50)

Why I Need To Take Oprah Shopping For Jeans

19 Mar

When jeans are too long they can look sloppy, ill-fitting, add unnecessary bulk to the frame and even make your legs appear shorter than they are.

Oprah needs to come jeans shopping with me so I can teach her how to know when jeans fit properly and show her the most flattering length to wear them. 😉

Sometimes just the smallest alteration can make a big difference.

The Shoe That Will Freshen Up And Modernise Your Wardrobe

1 Nov

Once you’ve found yourself a cool pair of sneakers try wearing them with unexpected pieces from your wardrobe.

The skirt you wore to your child’s christening, the slim black pants you wear to work or the trench coat you save for weddings or meetings.

Sneakers can add a freshness to your wardrobe by casualing (I may have made that word up) down some of your more formal pieces – so that you’re wearing them rather than just looking at them hanging in your wardrobe.

REMEMBER to keep your sneakers looking like they’re fresh out of the box – rather than like you’ve been out working on the farm in them.

TIP: Note the length of this skirt with the sneakers. Be careful you’re not wearing your skirt, with your sneakers, at a dowdy unflattering length.

See how some of the women who inspired me while I was recently in Paris, wore their sneakers here

The Velvet Blazer

3 Aug

The newest addition to my wardrobe is this navy velvet blazer.

You can spend a squillion dollars on a fancy designer blazer but if it doesn’t fit properly (ie the shoulders, the armholes, the length, the sleeve width, the sleeve length, the back seam and the lapels) it’ll never look great.  (*If you’d like to learn how to know when a blazer fits you perfectly book in for a styling session with me here)

If it’s not quite right, leave it behind in the store or commit to having it altered.

TIP – The shoulders should always fit perfectly because it’s too hard to have them fixed..

This one was on sale for $39 and it fits just right. (I also bought it in black)
