Black, White And Grey

25 Jun

white, black and grey

You might recall a couple of weeks ago I talked about how to wear black and white.  Hopefully by now you’ve had a chance to go through your wardrobe and consider what black and white pieces you own and have been able to come up with many different ways to wear them.

Now it’s time to add another color(shade) into the mix.

Grey.

You might think you can’t wear grey, but don’t give up on it til you’ve tried several different shades. (For example a light grey might make you look a bit washed out, but a charcoal could be fine)  Or if you like it and feel you can’t (don’t want to) wear it near your face, consider a shoe, pair of jeans, skirt, bag or pants.

There Are More Things To Wear To Work Than Black Pants

11 Jul

I came across this image recently and thought it was fabulous.

The guy is the Chairman and CEO of G.E. and the woman, Clara Gaymard, is the head of G.E. France. They’re off to meet with French President, Francois Hollande, to discuss G.E.’s $13 billion bid to buy a French energy unit. Fairly serious meeting I’d imagine. …and look at what she’s wearing.  A leather motorcycle jacket.

Clara is also an author, a mother of 9 and has been listed by Fortune magazine,  as being one of the fifty most powerful women in business, in the world.

After working at a Collins Street stockbroker and investment bank for more than 20 years I know exactly what corporate style is here in Melbourne.   To be honest I think it’s often a little safe and sometimes bland.  I know there are policies and restrictions (and so there should be) but there should still be room for individuality.

Certainly a leather motorcycle jacket might be pushing it a little far in some environments, but corporate/office style can be so much more than a pair of black pants and a top.

What do you think of the leather jacket worn to a business meeting? Appropriate or not? Do we need to wear corporate attire to perform our jobs well and be perceived as being professional?

Time For A Hair Change?

7 Mar

Well sadly the 2014 a/w Fashion Week’s are over.  No more fantasising that I’m in New York, Paris, London or Milan..til next time.

I’ve spent hours pouring over the images of the shows, watching online video streams of the parades and scrupulously checking out photos of what those who attended the shows have been wearing.  This is where I get most of my styling inspiration from.

I take note of what shoes show-goers are wearing, how and what coats they’re sporting,  what lengths they’re embracing in skirts and pants, how they’re clashing their patterns, layering their jewellery and what shades they’re wearing on their lips.

But the one image that jumped out at me,  among the hundreds I’ve seen over the past couple of weeks, is this one (above & below) of Clemence Poesy.

I’m contemplating a hair change.  I’ve had the same style for a while now and I think I’m ready for something fresh and new.

I’d get my hair cut into this style in a flash if I was confident I could achieve Clemence’s disheveled,  just-out-of-bed yet stylish, relaxed, tousled look.

My concern is that for some reason when it’s at chin or shoulder length, my hair has a tendency to flip and I’m nervous it might end up looking like this.

Rather than look like a cool French girl I might look like a 1960’s Stepford Wife.

Hmm…  Something to ponder over the weekend and then perhaps discuss with my hairstylist next week to get her thoughts. What do you think?

Wearing Navy With Black

6 Oct

Contrary to old-fashioned, outdated “fashion rules”, navy and black can be worn together – and in fact – can, if done well, look incredibly chic.

No, it more than likely won’t work when you try combining your navy suit jacket with your black suit pants.  Chance are you’ll look like you got dressed in the dark.

But it will work beautifully with a black pencil skirt and a navy silk blouse, a navy dress and a black patent leather belt or black jeans, a navy sweater and a black leather jacket.

Give it a go.  It just might give you a few more outfit combinations from the clothes you have hanging in your wardrobe. Ones that you might never have considered before.

Keep in mind, it’s all about the shade of the blue and the texture of the fabrics.
