A Pop Of Red

20 Dec

One way to add impact and interest to your outfit, is to add a pop of color.

While the easiest options are colored shoes or a colored bag, they’re certainly not all that’s available to you.

Here’s some ideas to get you thinking…

*Make sure you don’t overdo the amount of colors you wear in one outfit.  While some clever people can combine several different colors very well, for most of us it’s a good idea (so that we don’t appear confused) to limit ourselves to only a couple. (As demonstrated above)

How To Feminise An Outfit

21 Nov

If you put an outfit together and it feels a little more masculine than you’d like, try feminising it.

For example, a polo shirt and a pair of chinos.

Together or on their own they may not feel feminine enough for you. (Of course it depends on your personal style, your personality, the image you want to portray, etc.)

In this case Ines de la Fressange has piled on and layered several pieces of jewellery  (She’s also carrying quite a “ladylike” bag).

Some things (like dresses) can be thrown on and they instantly feel right, and others (parkas, boyfriend jeans, shorts, brogues, cotton shirts, etc, etc) often need some styling to achieve the desired look.  (and feel)

One Way You Can Update Your Old Jackets And Coats

6 Mar

Around this time each year I pull out all my old coats and jackets and assess what I have and consider what I might need when the cold weather arrives.

This involves deciding whether I need/want to add something new to my collection, what maintenance needs to be done and thinking about what I could do with them to update them and give them a new look.

This year, unless something amazing catches my eye, I’ve decided I don’t need a new coat – I’m going to focus my attention on giving some of my old one’s a makeover.

For some it might be big (like cutting it from knee length to hip length) and for others it might be a little change (like adding a sparkly vintage brooch).

If you’re creative, there are many ways you can give new life to an old piece. (See how I did it here)

In the photos below and above, I’ve shown you how, by swapping over the belt your jacket came with with something different, it can give it a whole new fresh look.

(If belts are not your thing, try something else)

Cropped Jeans

7 Mar

The trend that doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon (well at least among the fashionistas in Europe and the States) is cut off jeans.

The last four weeks I’ve been reading blogs, magazines and watching Instagram feeds, taking notice of what the show-goers are wearing during Fashion Month (In New York, London, Milan and Paris) for some inspiration and also to see what trends may emerge here in Australia in the coming months.

Doing this gives me some ideas for what I could add to my own wardrobe (and perhaps suggest to my clients) but also gives me some inspiration for what I might be able to do with the clothes I already have.  For example, add a brooch to a jacket, mix two colors I hadn’t considered, or in this case, crop my jeans with scissors.

You might recall I told you about it back here.

The other significant thing I noticed from the hundreds of images I looked at, was that there were barely a pair of skinny jeans to be seen.

If you’re still only wearing skinnies, it may be time to start experimenting with different styles..

Here’s some photos from the last month, of people in the street wearing their jeans chopped and with a raw edge.

TIP:  In wanting to experiment with this style, I bought a pair of jeans (Levis) from an opshop and cut them.  I’m still undecided as to whether it’s for me on not….but happy to play around with it for the time being. I think I’ll sit with it for a while and when it cools down try the look with a pair of ankle boots a la Emmanuelle Alt. (As seen above)
