Favourites

Black dress

When you’re visiting the stores as much as I do, and you’re seeing how various pieces work on different people (over and over) you start to have favourites.

Jeans that are a great color, have the right amount of stretch, that sit exactly where you want them to on your tummy and have ideal back pockets.

A skirt that isn’t too short or long, sits right on and highlights the waist, doesn’t crease across the hips and is in a color that goes with everything.

An ankle boot that finishes just on the right part of your ankle so it works beautifully (ie looks flattering) with skirts/dresses and pants/jeans.

A t-shirt that has a neckline that works for most people, no matter what size bust you have, that highlights the waist but still disguises a tummy, in a fabric that doesn’t cling and with a flattering sleeve.

This dress is one such favourite.   It’s a goodie – from the length, to the neckline, to the waist, to the sleeve, to the fabric.   Several of my clients have bought this one.  It’s a handy little dress to have in your wardrobe because of it’s versatility.

With a pair of pumps and pearls for an interview or a funeral, with a sexy strappy heel and sparkly earrings to an event or with an ankle boot and your leather jacket on a date.

How To Not Look Like A Waiter Wearing Black And White

18 Apr

These images from a recent Vogue Paris really caught my eye.

While I enjoy wearing black and white (I talked about it back here, remember?) I had lost sight of just how striking the combination can be.

The photos also reminded me of a few things I’ve had on my shopping wishlist for a while – black Ray-Ban Wayfarers, a white lace top, a black bomber jacket and white sneakers – that I should start hunting down, because of the impact they’d each have on my wardrobe.

I know some of you are nervous about wearing black and white together for fear of looking like a waiter or a penguin, but I think if you take these photos for inspiration, that won’t happen.

Just like wearing all black, it’s about how you wear it.

Consider the texture of the fabrics, the shapes of the garments and the interesting and unique accompanying accessories. (The decoration)

It’s not just about wearing any old white top with black bottoms.

That’s just boring.

Can you come up with some interesting outfit combinations using existing black and white pieces from your wardrobe? If not, what could you add to your wardrobe to give you more options?

Does Your Bra Fit You Properly?

6 Apr

Let’s face it most of us (including me) are guilty of wearing bras past their doing-their-job date.

One good way to check whether your bra fits you properly is to do the following test..

If when you lift your arms in the air your breasts pop out the bottom, the band is more than likely too big and/or the cup is too small.

As I mentioned here (and here), what you wear underneath, makes a huge difference to how your clothes look on you.

How To Be An Audrey

29 Mar

Anyone can be “in fashion”.  You just need to copy what everyone else is wearing.

True style is personal.

It’s knowing yourself and being confident about how you want to present yourself to the world.

Stylish women don’t follow the pack – they break rules and ignore trends that don’t work for them.

They carry their nana’s Glomesh purse, buy a vintage Mexican lace wedding dress on Etsy, or wear a men’s tuxedo with heels to a black tie event.

If you admire Audrey Hepburn’s style as much as I do, you might enjoy this little documentary.
